Napolitano And Others Slam Arizona Immigration Law

The Arizona immigration law, recently signed by Governor Jan Brewer, has won few fans. The bill has within the ranks of detractors, the President, the Mexican government, Janet Napolitano, and Meghan McCain. While the debate for now is over the methods, something has to be done about the issue. Arizona as it stands has to practically run for a personal loan business dealing with it.

Janet Napolitano condemns Arizona immigration law

Janet Napolitano recently voiced her displeasure with the Arizona immigration law. As head of the Department of Homeland Security, she feels the law in question “is a misguided law.” (From CNN .) The issue has long gone without addressing, and also the President and Congress might soon make it a top priority.

Meghan McCain breaks rank

Meghan McCain daughter of John McCain, does not agree with her father on this one. She recently wrote a column on The Daily Beast , she posted that the bill is a “bad law” and it “misses the bigger picture of what is really going on with illegal immigration.” She pointed out that those who don’t see the positive impacts of illegal immigrants’ labor can’t appreciate how the bill will negatively impact a population we depend on without acknowledging that we do.

The Government of Mexico weighs in

The President of Mexico doesn’t support this bill, and thinks Governor Brewer has acted contrary to what the best interests of all involved. A statement made by President Felipe Calderon voices his dissatisfaction with the legislation.

“The criminalization of the migration phenomenon, far from contributing to the cooperation and collaboration between Mexico and the U.S., represents an obstacle in the solution of common problems in the border region.” – from Christian Science Monitor .

He wasn’t the only Mexican official to condemn the bill. Consensus is apparently that Washington has neglected the issue, and the attitude towards many immigrants, especially Latinos, has been ignorant of their contributions and hypocritical.

Not like this is the first time

Heavy handed legislation targeting immigrants has been tried before. It never works, either. Most immigrants come to this country with a quick payday by honest labor in mind. You will find bad apples, to be sure, but a solution not in the best interests of both sides would seem remiss. There is demand for their labor, and there is supply, and nothing stands within the way of those forces.
