ABC News reports that Clementi, an 18-year-old freshman at Rutgers University in New Jersey, has committed death after learning that what he thought was a private homosexual encounter in his dorm room was broadcast live online. According to reports, fellow students Ravi and Wei were responsible for secretly monitoring Clementi with a webcam during a same-sex intimate encounter and transmitting the encounter live on the Internet. Soon after his horrific online outing, Clementi signed off on Facebook and signed out of life by jumping off a bridge.
A caution of a potential loss of life came from Tyler Clementi
On Sept. 22 at 8:42 p.m., Tyler Clementi’s Facebook post read “Jumping off the gw bridge sorry.” Clementi’s body has not yet been reported as found, although an unidentified male body was found by New Jersey authorities in the Hudson River just north of the bridge. Clementi’s Rutgers University ID was discovered in a wallet nearby. There was also his driver’s license contained in the wallet.
Paul Mainardi, attorney for the Clementi family, confirmed Tyler Clementi’s suicide via a statement in which the young man is recognized for his outstanding personal qualities and his distinguished musicianship.
Many are stating, ‘I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.’
Fellow Rutgers Scarlet Knights Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei are imposed with 2 counts apiece of invasion of privacy for broadcasting Tyler Clementi’s homosexual encounter via iChat, according to prosecutor Kaplan. On September 19, Ravi tweeted a remark saying:
“Roommate asked for the room till midnight. I went into molly’s room and turned on my webcam. I saw him making out with a dude. Yay.”
Two days after the first broadcast, Ravi tweeted again:
“Anyone with iChat, I dare you to video chat me between the hours of 9:30 and 12. Yes it’s happening again.”
Law enforcement come to take Wei and Ravi in
Wei and Ravi both surrendered to the newest Jersey police. Neither remains in police custody anymore though. As a result of her recognizance, Wei was able to be discharged from jail, reports ABC News. On the other hand, Dharun Ravi had to pay a $25,000 bail to get out. The investigation will continue leaving a lot more info to be found.
